The Borough of Stockton-on-Tees is set in the Tees Valley and consists of four principal towns: Stockton, Yarm, Thornaby and Billingham.
Billingham is one of the oldest settlements in the region and is a thriving, bustling community with an often forgotten village green and church.
Yarm is a handsome Georgian market town which, over the years, has become a chic place to eat, drink, shop, wander and people watch. A must-go for any visitor.
Thornaby, mentioned in the Domesday Book, has a modern centre which offers great shopping opportunities and Stockton, the region’s principal town, is a fascinating place bustling with life and steeped in history.
Norton today is a large suburb of Stockton but at its centre stands the unexpected haven of old Norton village, which still retains a rural atmosphere with cottages, a duck pond and a village green. For centuries, old Norton and its Saxon church was the centre of an important parish which included Stockton. Today the status of these towns has been reversed and Norton is now a part of the borough of Stockton on Tees.
In the rural area, Hilton, Ingleby Barwick, Hartburn, Egglescliffe, Carlton, Long Newton, Wolviston and Kirklevington are all charming villages full of individuality, fine features and friendly people. They’re well worth visiting. Why not take a car trip around them and see for yourself?
